Did you know your cat's tongue is faster than a speeding bullet when it's lapping water?
Well, maybe not quite faster than a speeding bullet - but still pretty damn fast. A cat's tongue can complete four full laps of milk or water - every second. That comes to - roughly one meter or three feet per second. That's a lot faster than the human eye can see, much less what the human tongue can do.
The New York Times website explains how four scientists from MIT, Virgina Tech and Princeton had to combine disciplines to discover just how a cat does it, why a cat has to do it (unlike humans, they can't fully close their mouths to create the vacuum needed to produce suction), what the always essential to liquid mechanics Froude number has to do with it, how African safari YouTube videos helped validate their hypothesis (and elegant mathematical formula) that correlates a cat's lapping speed with the size of the species of the cat and - most critically of all - why cats are more elegant than dogs when lapping up water.

City Hall's Assault On Citizen's Wallets Goes On 24 Hours A Day
Since the start of this year, it has gotten harder and harder to do business in the City of Los Angeles what with all the new fees, fines and taxes that make everything not just more expensive but also increasingly harder and harder to get anything done. Still, after a particularly tough few weeks and thinking I had seen every possible way the City could extract money from it's citizens, I spotted a new low last night at 10 PM.
Walking down an empty street, I saw a city employee ticketing a car parked in a commercial loading zone. Surprised, I asked the officer wasn't it legal for a car to park in in a commercial loading zone at night? The officer replied, yes. I think then asked if that was the case - then why was this car being ticketed? There was now no answer. I asked a second time, with no answer, and then a third time, but there was still no answer.
The officer then got into city car and drove away. Another person shortly walked up and we speculated on why the car was ticketed. The only possible answer we could come up with was that while the front tire was almost touching the curb, the rear tire was further way from the curb. The car behind this vehicle had parked - legally - at the very end of its space and that had made it hard for this car to pull into its space.
But the tire didn't seem to be at all far enough from the curb to warrant a ticket, though the angle of the car did somewhat exaggerate the distance - and a couple other cars on the same block were also parked with a tire the same distance from the curb but none of them received tickets. This car was also parked well within the white marks on the street side of the parking space and so this now ticketed car was in no way a hazard to passing traffic.
That left only one option for us to consider. That every night a certain number of tickets have to be written and a certain amount of money has to be raised and the officers who patrol each night have no choice but to select those whose turn it is to pay that night.

Why is Law and Order: Los Angeles So Bad It's Unwatchable?
As a fan of all the New York based Law and Order series - and I have seen every episode of every series multiple times - I can not understand why the LA based series is badly written, indifferently directed and horrendously miscast.
The first episode was so weak, I couldn't even stay interested long enough to follow the story and second episode was so badly written, once the last wildly improbable words were spoken - I deleted the series from my Hulu queue.

Ed Rosenthal Found Alive! Plus Update!
(Updating the below story, the LA TImes reports that Ed was conscious and talking with the rescue team when he was found this morning.)
It's a miracle. After a week alone in the dessert Ed Rosenthal was just found alive and airlifted to a hospital.

Downtown's Poet-Broker has been found alive nearly a week after he failed to return from a day-hike in Joshua Tree National Park.
Ed Rosenthal was airlifted to a local hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
Friend Jack Skelley posted the news on Rosenthal's Facebook page late this morning.
Ed has been found! He is alive! In critical condition. We just heard from his wife Nicole. They are taking him to hospital. Please keep praying....more info later...
The Desert Sun is also reporting Rosenthal's rescue, saying that he was located in the East Wide Canyon area. The paper quotes a park spokesman as saying that Rosenthal was conscious and talking with rescuers, but has "some injuries and some exposure issues."

Still No Word On Search For Ed Rosenthal
There is a full search for missing Downtown real estate agent, community builder and poet Ed Rosenthal l going on today in Johusa Tree National Park and while many articles have been written about all his has down for Downtown. no one has yet mentioned - much less printed - the poem he wrote to help Tom Gilmore get an extension on his purchase of the bulk of the Old Bank District which started the Downtown revival. I can't find my copy of the whole poem, but I did find this excerpt:
I'm sorry to say/That Gilmore can't pay/For the extension requested today/
But if you take my advice/You'll stay by his side/As he shifts to Downtown overdrive

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - Park rangers and rescue teams today vastly increased their search in Joshua Tree National Park for veteran Downtown real estate agent Ed Rosenthal. The 64-year-old known to many as the “poet-broker” has been missing since Friday, when he went hiking near Black Rock Campground.
Rosenthal told other campers he planned to go out for a day hike on his own. When he didn’t return, they reported him missing. Park staff were informed on Sunday and launched a search that day.
Joe Zarki, a spokesman for the park, said the search effort tripled in size today, with 55 people, most from the San Bernardino County Search and Rescue team, now combing the wilderness south of the campground. A helicopter is also canvassing the park.

Downtown Poet-Broker Ed Rosenthal Reported Missing
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Poet-broker Ed Rosenthal, a figure in the Downtown arts and real estate communities, is missing after failing to return from a weekend hike in Joshua Tree National Park.
According to a report that first appeared in the Los Angeles Business Journal, Rosenthal was reported missing Sunday evening after his car was found at the park's Black Rock campground. The L.A. Times reports that Rosenthal was last seen Friday. Rosenthal has brokered a number of large deals Downtown, but is best known for his poetry about the neighborhood.

Two Great Arts Shows Open Saturday Night August 7th 1/2 BLock From 5th and Main - 7 - 9
Lino Martinez presents a new series of drawings with silkscreen printing intervention that explores representations of Native Americans using images of the famed photographer, Edward Curtis. The drawings become part of an abstract composition, and the subject a negotiation of metaphors associated with geometric patterns and reinterpretations of documentary photography.
In an atmosphere of immigration politics along with the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution, Lino Martinez’s drawings provoke a meditation on the idea of the plight of the primitive mind, the meaning of being civilized, and habitat in the architecture of the contemporary society.
